Xbox Cloud Gaming’s new hourly cap is reportedly set exactly where Microsoft stops making money on it
Microsoft will implement monthly usage caps on Xbox Cloud Gaming starting November 2026, ending unlimited access for subscribers. Game Pass Essential users will be capped at 5 hours monthly, Premium subscribers at 10 hours, and Ultimate subscribers at 15 hours.
According to Windows Central citing unnamed Microsoft sources, the 15-hour cap for Ultimate users is deliberately set at the exact point where Microsoft stops profiting on the service—a data-driven constraint that underscores serious profitability challenges with the cloud streaming model. This represents a significant retreat from Xbox’s previous positioning of cloud gaming as a premium unlimited benefit.
Microsoft estimates the changes will affect roughly 4% of Game Pass subscribers, which still represents over one million impacted players. The decision signals acknowledgment that the current business model cannot sustain unlimited consumption at scale. Paradoxically, while implementing these restrictions, Microsoft is simultaneously expanding Xbox Cloud Gaming availability to smart TV platforms from LG, Samsung, and TCL, suggesting the company aims to drive adoption among new audiences even as it constrains per-user consumption to maintain financial viability.
