18 years after Metal Gear Solid 4 first launched, a modder has shown off its first custom map, MGS3’s Groznyj Grad

Eighteen years after its original 2008 release, Metal Gear Solid 4 has received its first custom singleplayer map, marking a significant milestone for the stealth-action classic’s modding community. YouTuber TriggerHappy demonstrated the newly created Groznyj Grad level—the iconic GRU fortress from Metal Gear Solid 3—featuring protagonist Old Snake navigating the fortress through stealth mechanics.

The achievement is particularly noteworthy given that this represents the first custom singleplayer map created for MGS4, distinguishing it from a previous 2021 effort by modder Jayveer, who had ported a map from Metal Gear Arcade into Metal Gear Online 2, the game’s multiplayer component.

The modding milestone is made even more unusual by the fact that MGS4, originally exclusive to PlayStation, is now accessible on PC—a platform where the game never officially launched. This unexpected availability on personal computers has opened new possibilities for the community to extend and customize the game’s content, cementing the dedication of Metal Gear Solid’s fanbase to keeping the franchise’s legacy alive through creative modifications.
