Blood Dungeon Is A Survivors-Like For People Who Don’t Like Vampire Survivors
Messhof, the developer behind Nidhogg and Wheel World, is launching Blood Dungeon, a new entry in the “Survivors-like” subgenre that seeks to refine the formula established by Vampire Survivors.
Vampire Survivors, released in 2021, popularized the “bullet heaven” concept—a reversal of traditional bullet hell mechanics—and became so influential that the resulting subgenre is now commonly referred to as “Survivors-likes.” However, not all players were entirely satisfied with Vampire Survivors’ execution of the concept.
Blood Dungeon aims to address this gap by building upon and expanding the core elements that made Survivors-likes successful. The defining characteristics of the genre include automatic combat systems, progressively stronger enemy waves, and roguelike-inspired randomized upgrades that players encounter during runs. These mechanics have since become standard across multiple titles in the space, including Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor and Brotato.
Messhof’s approach appears to be one of refinement rather than wholesale innovation, taking the foundational ideas that resonated with players while fleshing out the formula to create a more defined vision for where the genre could evolve. The studio’s pedigree with action-focused indie titles suggests Blood Dungeon may bring a particular artistic or mechanical sensibility to the crowded Survivors-like landscape.
