Two years after its rocky launch, Civilization 7’s first paid expansion Earthrise is on its way - but first comes the atomic age

Civilization 7 is receiving substantial post-launch support as developer Firaxis announces two major additions coming in 2027. The free Arc of Tomorrow update extends the strategy game’s playable timeline from the 1950s into the near future, introducing a new Atomic Age with updated technology trees, civic trees, Triumphs, and social policies. The update emphasizes elaborate nuclear-era gameplay mechanics, adding strategic dimensions for arms race competition and city-state proxy wars that go beyond the traditional approach of simply researching nuclear weapons technology. Players will be able to engage in high-stakes geopolitical maneuvering reminiscent of Cold War dynamics.

The announcement comes two years after Civilization 7’s widely criticized launch, a period during which the long-running series celebrates its 35th anniversary milestone. The rocky release had generated considerable controversy, but Firaxis appears committed to refining and expanding the experience through ongoing updates. Beyond the free Arc of Tomorrow update, Firaxis has also unveiled Earthrise, the game’s first paid expansion, arriving in conjunction with or following the launch of the Atomic Age update. This expansion represents a significant step in the post-launch roadmap and signals Firaxis’s intention to build upon the foundation established at launch. The dual approach of free content and premium expansion demonstrates a commitment to player satisfaction and sustained development following the game’s turbulent introduction to the market.
