Lilly Wachowski Says ‘I’m Kinda Done’ With The Matrix, Reveals ‘Complicated Situation’ With The Matrix 5
Lilly Wachowski has stated she is “kinda done” with The Matrix franchise, amid a proposed fifth film in development at Warner Bros. The filmmaker has also indicated there may be complications surrounding the project.
Warner Bros. announced The Matrix 5 in 2024, with director-writer Drew Goddard (known for The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods) set to helm the film. If produced, it would be the first Matrix film not directed by either Lana or Lilly Wachowski, though Lana Wachowski was reportedly set to executive produce.
Góddard pitched a new creative direction for the franchise to Warner Bros., which the studio believes would honor what the Wachowskis established over 25+ years while advancing the Matrix universe in fresh directions.
Lilly Wachowski’s recent comments suggest significant uncertainty about the project’s future, hinting at potential behind-the-scenes complications or creative differences regarding the franchise’s direction. Her remarks indicate that the Wachowskis’ approval or involvement may be a critical factor in whether the film proceeds to production.
The Matrix franchise stands as a landmark property in science fiction cinema since its 1999 debut. The original trilogy, directed by the Wachowskis, established the series’ core mythology and cultural impact. Subsequent films have received mixed receptions, and industry observers and fans continue to watch the franchise’s trajectory closely.
