Resident Evil Director Zach Cregger Confirms He Already Has Sequels in Mind

Director Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) is taking an unconventional approach to adapting Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise for film. Rather than centering the story on iconic game characters like Claire Redfield, Ada Wong, or Albert Wesker, Cregger’s adaptation focuses on capturing the visceral experience of surviving within a Resident Evil scenario.

The film follows Austin Abrams as a medical courier attempting to reach Raccoon City, now overrun with zombies and other horrors. Cregger’s casting choice reflects his philosophy: featuring an ordinary, unprepared protagonist—someone out of shape and without combat training—who must navigate through the nightmare gauntlet. This approach prioritizes authenticity to the player’s experience of panic, dread, and desperation over adapting the franchise’s existing narrative.

Cregger describes his vision as understanding Resident Evil not just through its plot mechanics, but through the emotional core of the gameplay—the terror of low ammunition, the confusion of being ambushed, and the instinct to survive through chaos.

Early box office performance has already sparked franchise interest, with studio executives considering sequels. The September release appears positioned to establish whether this character-focused, experience-driven adaptation can launch a successful franchise.
