Sebastian Stan Half-Jokingly Pitched a ‘Sicario-esque’ Bucky Barnes Movie to MCU Boss Kevin Feige

Sebastian Stan recently pitched a solo Bucky Barnes film to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, proposing a grittier, more intimate approach to the character’s story. During an interview with New York Magazine, Stan revealed he pitched the project in the vein of Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed 2015 thriller Sicario, imagining a smaller-scale, tighter-budgeted film focused on a personal mission rather than a sprawling blockbuster.

According to Stan’s description, the proposed film would follow Bucky as he becomes obsessed with tracking down someone from his past—a person connected to the period when he was brainwashed as the Winter Soldier. The actor emphasized that the production would maintain a modest budget while exploring the psychological weight of Bucky’s history and his quest for answers.

StanCharacteristically noted that he presented the pitch “half-joking,” suggesting the idea came up in a casual conversation rather than as a formal pitch meeting. However, Kevin Feige responded positively to the concept, telling Stan the idea “sounds cool.” While Feige’s encouraging response doesn’t guarantee the project will move forward, it indicates the MCU leadership is at least open to exploring different storytelling approaches for established characters.

The pitch reflects growing interest in mature, character-driven takes on superhero narratives, moving away from the typical large-scale action spectacles. For Bucky Barnes specifically, a psychological thriller approach could provide fresh material, given the character’s complex history and trauma. Whether Marvel Studios will develop this concept into an actual project remains to be seen, but Stan’s enthusiasm and Feige’s receptiveness suggest the character still has untapped potential within the MCU.
