Donnie Darko Returning to Theaters in 4K for 25th Anniversary

Richard Kelly’s 1999 cult classic Donnie Darko is returning to theaters in 4K for its 25th anniversary. The film will have a limited theatrical release over a three-day event dubbed “Donnie Darko Day,” running October 2–4, 2026 nationwide. The re-release is a collaboration between American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre and Saga Arts, with distribution handled by Fathom Entertainment.

The anniversary release will include an exclusive introduction from writer-director Kelly exploring the film’s lasting cultural impact and how it has maintained a devoted fanbase over the past two and a half decades. Tickets are now available through Fathom Entertainment’s website.

The 2001 psychological thriller has become a touchstone of cult cinema, originally premiering at the Sundance Film Festival before developing a passionate following despite mixed initial reception. The 4K restoration represents a technical upgrade of the film for modern theatrical presentation, allowing longtime fans and new audiences to experience the celebrated work in enhanced visual quality.
