Why Can’t I Use Loki in Marvel Rivals?

Marvel Rivals is launching its 10th season with a dramatic narrative twist: the God of Mischief has been removed from the game’s playable roster after being “killed” by the season’s new character.

The season, titled “Butcher’s Blasphemy,” debuts on September 11, 2026, and introduces Gorr the God Butcher, the legendary Thor villain. Rather than simply arriving as a new playable character, Gorr’s introduction is woven directly into Marvel Rivals’ ongoing story. The Season 10 announcement trailer depicts Gorr attacking Asgard and battling Loki, driving All-Black the Necrosword through the trickster god and apparently killing him.

Loki’s removal from gameplay now reflects this in-story death. The character is marked as “dead” on the roster and cannot be selected in Quick Play, Arcade, Practice vs AI, or 18 vs 18 modes, though he remains available in social hubs and competitive play. This narrative-driven mechanic directly ties Marvel Rivals’ live-service content to character availability, creating an integrated storytelling experience that impacts gameplay.

NetEase Games is leveraging this approach to raise narrative stakes for invested players, with potential implications for other divine beings remaining in the roster. The removal serves as a dramatic introduction to Gorr and signals that Season 10’s campaign may continue to affect character availability throughout the season. The update launches September 11, 2026.
