Sony isn’t phasing out discs quite as quickly as we thought
Sony has clarified misconceptions about its video game disc phase-out timeline. While the company maintains its January 2028 target date for ending disc support, it’s not abandoning physical media production as rapidly as recent reports suggested.
The confusion stems from earlier coverage indicating that Sony’s Thalgau plant—its last remaining disc manufacturing facility—would slash production by 90 percent in 2028. However, a Sony DADC spokesperson clarified to journalist Brian Crecente that the actual reduction will be only 10 percent, not 90 percent. The misunderstanding apparently originated from misinterpretation of a statement by the disc division’s president.
This correction suggests Sony will maintain substantial disc production capacity even as it transitions away from physical media for gaming. The company’s January 2028 deadline remains firm, indicating that while new game discs will no longer be produced after that date, the manufacturing infrastructure isn’t being dismantled as abruptly as initially reported. This measured approach reflects the reality of phasing out decades-old technology while managing existing disc production and distribution networks.
