Original Star Wars and Starfighter Heading to IMAX 70mm

Lucasfilm and Disney announced that the original Star Wars film from 1977 will debut in IMAX 70mm for the first time ever. The newly restored version, officially titled Star Wars: A New Hope, will be re-released in theaters on February 19, 2027, as part of a yearlong 50th anniversary celebration. The theatrical re-release will be available in both digital and IMAX 70mm film formats across select theater locations for a limited engagement, offering fans and cinema enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the iconic film on the largest screens possible.

This milestone marks a significant moment in the film’s theatrical history, as the 1977 classic has never been presented in IMAX 70mm format during previous releases. The newly restored restoration will allow the film to showcase its visual quality on the biggest screens available to modern audiences.

Lucasfilm and IMAX also reconfirmed that the upcoming standalone film Star Wars: Starfighter will receive the same IMAX 70mm treatment. The film is scheduled to release on May 28, 2027, giving Star Wars fans two major theatrical experiences to anticipate in 2027. Both releases underscore the continued theatrical appeal of the Star Wars franchise and studios’ investment in premium large-format presentations for high-profile franchises.
