Marvel’s Ex-Blade Director Finally Made the Mahershala Ali Movie of His Dreams
After departing from Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot in 2022, filmmaker Bassam Tariq has realized his creative vision through an independent film. In 2021, Marvel tapped the acclaimed indie director—known for Riz Ahmed’s Mogul Mowgli—to direct the vampire hunter franchise starring Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali. The project promised major studio resources and A-list collaboration, but the partnership dissolved, and Blade was subsequently dropped from Marvel’s slate.
Tariq has channeled his unrealized ambitions into Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, an independent drama that embodies the visionary storytelling he intended for the superhero film. Set in Texas and deeply immersed in Islamic culture, the narrative follows a Muslim contract killer struggling to balance his criminal life with fatherhood and responsibilities to his children and newborn. The film oscillates between intimate family drama and intense, visceral sequences.
The transition from a tentpole Marvel production to independent filmmaking reflects Tariq’s commitment to meaningful, culturally grounded storytelling. Working outside the studio system has afforded him greater creative control and alignment with his artistic vision. Rather than treating the Blade departure as a setback, Tariq has demonstrated that ambitious, character-driven cinema can thrive independently. The project underscores a broader industry trend where directors sometimes achieve fuller creative expression by stepping away from major franchises to pursue more personal, culturally specific narratives.
