Ubisoft joins Xbox’s disc-to-digital program, with more publishers to follow
Microsoft’s disc-to-digital program for Xbox has entered testing, offering a novel approach to game ownership. The initiative allows players to insert physical game discs into Xbox One or Xbox Series X consoles to gain permanent digital rights to those titles. This enables access to digital downloads, cloud streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Play Anywhere functionality.
The program has achieved significant industry momentum, with over 1,000 games already supported since its launch. Major publisher Ubisoft has joined the initiative, signaling broader publisher support. The company’s participation suggests that additional publishers are expected to follow suit in supporting the program.
The disc-to-digital conversion represents a significant shift in how players can manage their existing physical game libraries. By registering a disc with their Xbox account, players gain the flexibility to play their games digitally without maintaining physical media, while preserving their existing investments in disc-based games.
