Nintendo Zelda Direct live report - the big news from today’s 40th anniversary showcase

Nintendo held a special 30-minute Direct showcase on September 8th celebrating The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary, delivering major announcements for the franchise’s upcoming projects.

The primary focus was the highly anticipated Ocarina of Time remake for Nintendo Switch 2, which received its full reveal and gameplay showcase. Nintendo confirmed the remake will launch in November 2026. To accompany the release, Nintendo will also sell a physical Ocarina instrument that players can use with the game.

Beyond the remake, Nintendo announced a Zelda-themed Switch 2 Special Edition Console and matching Pro Controller, expected to be popular collector’s items. The company also revealed new Zelda amiibo figures and additional collectibles, including LEGO sets.

The live-action Legend of Zelda movie also made an appearance in the Direct. Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the film’s title as simply “The Legend of Zelda” with no subtitle, explaining that players will understand the naming choice after seeing it. He noted the film will feature homages to the game series and a significant role for the Triforce, the iconic triangular symbol central to the franchise. However, no trailer was shown, disappointing fans hoping for a preview; the film is scheduled to release in April 2027.

The Direct was the first of two Nintendo Direct events scheduled for the week, with Nintendo promising additional announcements to come. While fans had hoped for reveals of new mainline Zelda adventures, this anniversary celebration focused primarily on the Ocarina of Time remake and commemorative content.
