The Legend of Zelda film is just called “The Legend of Zelda”, apparently, and there’s a good reason it doesn’t have a subtitle

Nintendo has announced further details about its highly anticipated live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda during a Nintendo Direct dedicated to the franchise’s 40th anniversary.

The film’s title will simply be “The Legend of Zelda” without a subtitle. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto explained that the reasoning behind this minimalist title choice will become clear once audiences see the film, though he declined to elaborate further. The movie is scheduled for release on April 30, 2027.

The film will star Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Rather than adapting a specific game from the series, the movie will present an original story drawing inspiration from stories, ideas, and concepts developed across the franchise’s 40-year history. Miyamoto hinted at the significance of the Triforce to the film’s narrative without providing specifics.

The live-action adaptation was originally announced in November 2023 and is being developed by Columbia Pictures in partnership with Nintendo. The film’s director is Maze R. Beyond the cast and basic plot information, Nintendo has been largely secretive about the project’s scope and direction.

The decision to create an original story rather than directly adapting a specific game suggests the filmmakers intend to craft something distinct from existing Zelda narratives while honoring the overarching themes and mythology of the beloved franchise.
