Almost 1,900 Blizzard workers vote through a “historic” union contract securing protections against layoffs and gen-AI

Around 1,900 unionized workers at Blizzard Entertainment represented by the Communications Workers of America have ratified their first union contract with Microsoft after over two years of negotiations. The historic agreement covers employees across multiple teams including World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, Hearthstone, and Warcraft Rumble, as well as quality assurance, platform technology, customer support, and story development staff.

The contract establishes several major protections and benefits. Most notably, it requires Microsoft and Blizzard to negotiate with the union before deploying generative AI tools to automate or replace jobs—considered an industry first for game developers. Workers also secured significant layoff protections, including job-recall rights guaranteeing laid-off employees can be offered an open position within 14 months of their layoff announcement.

Additional contract wins include guaranteed wage increases, a three-day hybrid work week with remote working options, disability accommodations, and formal grievance procedures. The agreement lasts four to five years and represents a major milestone after a protracted bargaining process that included worker demonstrations at Blizzard’s Irvine campus. Union representatives believe the contract could set a new standard for unionization efforts across the video game industry.
