Stephen King’s 1974 Horror Classic Returns in First Look at Prime Video’s New 8-Episode Series
Stephen King’s debut 1974 novel Carrie is being adapted into an eight-episode series for Prime Video, premiering in October, directed by Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep). The new adaptation brings the classic horror story to modern-day America, following Carrie White (Summer H. Howell), a naive and innocent young girl raised with strict discipline who must navigate her high school years as an outsider. While faithful to King’s original narrative, the adaptation addresses contemporary challenges including social media harassment and digital bullying alongside traditional in-person cruelty and social exclusion. Carrie’s isolated upbringing and lack of social awareness make her particularly vulnerable to her peers’ malice. This marks another reimagining of King’s prolific career-launching novel, which has been adapted multiple times across different eras and media formats. Flanagan, recognized for his successful Stephen King adaptations including Midnight Mass and Doctor Sleep, brings his distinctive directorial style to this miniseries format, updating the story’s setting and challenges while preserving the core themes of isolation, persecution, and supernatural reckoning.
