‘No-one puts Double Fine out of business except me’, says Tim Schafer on taking Double Fine independent: ‘Asha’s not going to shoot my dog’
Double Fine Productions has announced its independence from Microsoft, separating from the company amid a broader wave of Xbox layoffs affecting 3,200 industry workers. The studio’s departure marks a significant strategic shift following a difficult recent period for the company’s game releases.
Studio founder Tim Schafer indicated that the decision came in response to concerns about Double Fine’s future under Microsoft’s leadership, particularly following interactions with new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. In a Bloomberg interview, Schafer expressed that the studio needed to chart its own course rather than risk being eliminated amid broader corporate restructuring. He remarked that no one would shut down Double Fine “except me,” suggesting he views independence as preferable to remaining under Microsoft’s watch.
Double Fine’s recent commercial performance had been mixed following the critical success of Psychonauts 2. The studio’s subsequent releases in 2025 and 2026—Keeper and Kiln—failed to gain significant commercial traction, placing the studio at potential risk during Microsoft’s consolidation efforts.
Schafer’s comments suggest underlying tensions between the studio and Microsoft’s recent strategic direction under Sharma’s leadership. The founder’s framing of independence as a proactive survival measure reflects broader industry concerns about studio autonomy and creative control in an era of corporate consolidation. The move allows Double Fine to operate independently and potentially pursue projects outside corporate constraints.
