Marvel Rivals breaks its 17 month streak of adding 2 heroes per season, but its creative director reassures fans it’s not ’the new normal'

Marvel Rivals is departing from its established pattern for Season 10, adding only one new hero—Gorr the God Butcher—instead of the typical two. This breaks a 17-month streak dating back eight seasons of consistent dual-hero releases per season.

To offset the reduced hero additions, Season 10 will introduce two new game modes and a substantial array of balance changes. Creative director Guangyun Chen outlined the seasonal structure in a developer diary, noting that the first half will feature Gorr the God Butcher alongside a new map. Additional content is planned for the second half of the season.

The decision reflects a strategic shift in NetEase’s development priorities. Rather than maintaining the hero release cadence fans have come to expect, the team is focusing resources on strengthening the game’s foundational systems and overall quality. Chen emphasized in the announcement that this change should not alarm players concerned about the game’s long-term direction.

NetEase has been explicit in reassuring the community that this departure from tradition does not signal a permanent change to Marvel Rivals’ content strategy. The creative director stressed that the reduced hero count is not “the new normal,” suggesting this is a deliberate, temporary adjustment rather than a lasting shift in development philosophy. The statement aims to balance player expectations while justifying the focus on foundational improvements and system refinements.
