Multiple Switch 2 Editions Were Announced Today, But One Big Exception Remains

Nintendo announced multiple new editions for the Nintendo Switch 2 during its latest Direct presentation, but one major title notably remains absent: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The fighting game is the third best-selling title on the original Nintendo Switch and stands out as the only top 10 best-selling Switch game without a Switch 2-related update or port.

This omission marks a significant gap in Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch lineup. Industry observers, including GameSpot, have previously highlighted that a Switch 2 edition of Smash Bros. Ultimate should have been an obvious choice given the game’s enduring popularity and competitive esports presence. Nearly every other major title in the Switch’s top 10 best-sellers has received or will receive a Switch 2 version.

The absence is particularly notable given Smash Bros. Ultimate’s continued relevance as a flagship Nintendo franchise title and its thriving competitive community. As of June 30, the game maintained its position as the third best-selling Switch title of all time, demonstrating its sustained commercial and cultural importance. The lack of an announced Switch 2 edition leaves questions about Nintendo’s future plans for the series on its newest hardware.
