Valheim 1.0 progression guide: What to do in every biome and when to do it
Valheim has officially reached version 1.0, marking the game’s complete launch from early access with significant new content. The expansion introduces the Deep North as the final biome, presenting players with new challenges, bosses, and progression mechanics spanning eight total biomes: Meadows, Black Forest, Swamps, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands, and Deep North.
Key new features include the Gammeltroll, a colossal 30-foot tall rock boss encountered in the Deep North that doesn’t fall when defeated but transforms into a petrified statue requiring special mining techniques to access critical late-game resources. Players seeking to progress must obtain the Intricate Key, a hard-to-find item discovered in snow-covered villages, with multiple keys needed to unlock castle doors throughout the biome.
The Grappling Hook is highlighted as an essential traversal tool for the Mistlands biome, found within the Infested Mines dungeons. This addition addresses the biome’s treacherous terrain and steep drop-offs that previously caused repeated fall damage.
The release raises a common question among returning and new players: whether to create fresh characters and worlds for 1.0 or continue with existing saves. While biome progression order remains largely unchanged from early access, newly generated areas contain new content that won’t appear in previously explored regions, making the decision contextual to individual player preferences.
The 1.0 launch represents a major milestone for the Viking survival crafting game, delivering the final chapter of its planned progression system and providing players with comprehensive guides for navigating each biome in optimal order.
