Blizzard must now ‘discuss, evaluate, and bargain’ its AI usage with its developers

Blizzard Entertainment has reached a landmark labor agreement with its union, the Communications Workers of America (CWA), that requires the studio to “discuss, evaluate, and bargain” before implementing generative AI in the workplace. The contract, negotiated over two years, impacts approximately 1,900 workers across Blizzard’s major franchises including World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Overwatch, Diablo, and quality assurance teams.

The agreement represents a significant victory for gaming industry workers amid broader workforce uncertainty. It comes in the wake of Microsoft’s Xbox “reset” initiative, which resulted in over 1,600 job cuts across the gaming division, underscoring the precarious position of developers in an era of rapid technological change and industry consolidation.

By mandating negotiation around AI implementation, the contract gives workers a voice in how generative AI will be integrated into their daily work. This establishes an important precedent in an industry that has increasingly embraced AI tools without formal consultation with the employees most affected by their deployment.
