Final Fantasy VII Revelation Director Explains Why the Physical Disc Version Requires a Download to Play

Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has explained the decision to require a download for the game’s physical disc version on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The physical edition ships on a single disc and mandates an internet connection to download the remainder of the game, departing from the approach used by the first two entries in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy—Remake and Rebirth—which each shipped on two separate discs (one for installation, one for play). The Nintendo Switch 2 version will be distributed via game-key card instead of physical media.

The announcement sparked criticism from some players who had anticipated being able to play Final Fantasy VII Revelation fully from its physical media without requiring updates. Hamaguchi responded by stating he is “very happy” the team could release a physical edition at all, suggesting technical constraints may have influenced the decision. His comment hints that delivering any physical version was a significant undertaking given modern technical limitations.

This situation underscores the challenges facing physical game releases in the current console generation, particularly as Sony has announced plans to cease physical disc production entirely. The single-disc requirement represents a practical compromise between preserving physical media availability and accommodating the growing data requirements of modern AAA titles.
