After Google mapped an adult male fruit fly’s brain, software engineers made it play Doom, Mario64, and Beat Saber

Google has announced a major milestone in neuroscience: the complete mapping of an adult male fruit fly’s brain and central nervous system into a 3D neural model. Using artificial intelligence to combine millions of 2D microscopy images, researchers reconstructed over 166,000 neurons in precise detail. The company describes this connectome as a foundational resource that could accelerate understanding of how brains work at a fundamental level.

Within three days of the announcement, software engineers connected the mapped neural data to video game engines, making the fruit fly brain simulation play Doom, Mario 64, Beat Saber, and Minecraft. These experiments demonstrate a novel application of connectomic data—using actual neural structures to drive interactive behavior in gaming environments.

However, viral social media has inflated claims around the research into hyperbolic narratives. A YouTube short from creator Ro0oney titled “I uploaded a consciousness into Minecraft” suggests the fruit fly’s consciousness was literally uploaded into games and even “committed suicide” in Minecraft. These claims fundamentally misrepresent the scientific achievement. The brain mapping is a static anatomical catalog of neural connections—not a functioning artificial consciousness or sentient entity. The project represents genuine scientific progress in connectomics and neuroscience, but the gap between the actual research and the viral mythology it has spawned illustrates how complex scientific work can be distorted through popular discourse and creative reinterpretation by internet culture.
