Newzoo: Most established live-service and evergreen titles were flat or down year over year in H1 2026

Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report reveals a challenging period for established live-service and evergreen titles in the first half of 2026. Most titles in these categories experienced flat or year-over-year declines compared to the same period in 2025, signaling potential market saturation in the live-service space.

Growth was concentrated among a select group of titles, including World of Warcraft, Diablo 4, Overwatch, Roblox, and specific international releases from Tencent. This narrow pool of winners suggests that only well-established franchises with strong player bases and compelling content updates managed to maintain momentum.

Digital revenues declined year-over-year across six Western markets during H1 2026. Newzoo attributed this downturn to the prevalence of free-to-play models and annualized release patterns, which created revenue pressures on developers and publishers relying on these monetisation strategies.

Platform subscription services may provide relief from these trends. PlayStation Plus is noted as a potential growth driver for multi-game subscription services, suggesting bundled access models could offset challenges in traditional digital sales.

The console market’s slowdown is expected to reverse with Grand Theft Auto 6’s launch, which analysts anticipate will provide a significant boost to hardware sales, particularly for PlayStation systems.
