“Everyone wants immediate gratification” - Project Zeta studio on making a new action-focused MOBA without all the fluff

Project Zeta, a new MOBA from developer Nirvanana and publisher Krafton, aims to reinvent the genre by emphasizing constant action and reducing downtime that plagues traditional MOBAs. Described as an “espresso MOBA,” the game is billed as a fast-paced alternative to the long, drawn-out sessions typical of existing MOBA titles.

Unlike traditional MOBAs that organize gameplay around lanes, Project Zeta structures matches around four teams of three players competing in a “Tactical Hero Arena” presented from a third-person action perspective. Rather than relying on passive farming and strategic pacing, Project Zeta focuses on constant engagement and objectives. The game is explicitly designed to discourage defensive play, as developers note: “This is not a game about hiding in bushes.”

The core gameplay loop encourages aggressive teamfighting throughout matches. Players begin by defeating monsters to level up—a familiar MOBA element—but approximately three minutes into each session, gameplay shifts to direct competition over objectives. Teams that actively seek out fights and compete for objectives are incentivized to succeed.

Each session is divided into seven distinct phases, structuring progression and maintaining momentum. This design philosophy directly addresses frustrations in traditional MOBAs: lengthy sessions where matches become unwinnable time sinks and extended periods of low-action gameplay. By making fights central to success and emphasizing race-like competitive intensity, Project Zeta attempts to deliver the teamwork, character mastery, and strategic depth players value in MOBAs while eliminating the downtime and frustration that drive players away.
