Switch 2 Update Adds TV VRR Support - but It Only Works in One Game Right Now
Nintendo released system software update 23.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2, adding Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for docked mode. VRR adjusts a display’s refresh rate to match a game’s frame rate, reducing screen tearing and stuttering—a technology already standard on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
To enable the feature, players must first update their dock firmware, then toggle VRR on in the console’s Display settings. However, the feature operates on a developer whitelist, meaning only games flagged as supporting docked VRR will activate it. Currently, only one title supports TV VRR: Welcome Tour.
VRR was available in handheld mode at the Switch 2’s launch but was notably absent for docked play, despite Nintendo’s initial promise to include it. The update arrives more than a year after the console’s release. Beyond VRR support, the update also introduces Switch 2 to Switch 2 system transfer functionality, conveniently timed for the upcoming Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary special edition console.
