Framework cancels custom low profile keyboard module for its laptops: ‘We weren’t able to bring costs to a place where the product economics worked’
Framework has canceled its One Key Module Developer Program, which launched in December 2025 with the goal of creating custom ultra-low-profile keyboards and input modules for Framework Laptop users. The company stated they “weren’t able to bring costs to a place where the product economics worked,” indicating that development and manufacturing expenses exceeded viable commercial thresholds.
The program represented an effort to extend Framework’s modular design philosophy beyond standard components. By opening keyboard development to external partners, Framework aimed to enable users to choose specialized input solutions tailored to gaming, professional work, or accessibility needs.
However, the specialized nature of ultra-low-profile keyboard modules proved challenging from a production standpoint. Costs associated with custom development, certification, and small-batch manufacturing apparently exceeded projected market demand and acceptable price points for consumers.
This cancellation reflects the ongoing tension between modularity and economics in consumer hardware. While Framework has built its reputation on repairability and customization, some ambitious initiatives cannot overcome practical constraints of cost-effective manufacturing. The company must focus its modular efforts on components that achieve better economic viability.
