Pokémon Go and EA FC could be “under one roof”, as EA and Saudi-owned Savvy Games Group reportedly considering merger
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is reportedly considering a merger between Electronic Arts and its subsidiary Savvy Games Group, according to sources speaking with Bloomberg. The proposed consolidation would create a massive gaming and esports conglomerate, combining EA’s major franchises like EA FC, Apex Legends, and Battlefield with Savvy’s existing portfolio.
The merger is intended to “ensure better coordination between its assets,” according to the unnamed sources. The move would bring together EA—acquired by the PIF in a record $55 billion leveraged buyout earlier this year—with Savvy Games Group, which already owns or holds significant stakes in numerous gaming companies and publishers.
Savvy Games’ current holdings include Scopely (developer of Pokémon Go), ESL Gaming, and FaceIt, as well as major stakes in Capcom, Nexon, Take-Two Interactive, Activision Blizzard, and Koei Tecmo. The fund also holds a $1 billion stake in Embracer Group. Additionally, Savvy is completing a $6 billion acquisition of Chinese mobile gaming company Moonton, a deal announced in March.
The merger could potentially occur once the Moonton acquisition concludes. However, sources indicate that no final decision has been made, and the move could face regulatory scrutiny from authorities across multiple jurisdictions given the scale of the proposed consolidation and the number of major gaming companies it would directly or indirectly control.
