How Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 Will Benefit From Tech Improvements Made for John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, which launched in March below publisher Focus Entertainment’s commercial expectations, has proven worthwhile for developer Saber Interactive in technical terms. According to Tim Willits, the studio’s development chief, the technology developed for Toxic Commando will be leveraged for the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.
Toxic Commando utilizes Saber Interactive’s proprietary technology designed to handle large swarms of enemies in co-op gameplay. This same tech foundation has been employed across multiple Saber titles: World War Z featured zombie swarms, while Space Marine 2 used it to render Tyranid enemies. By extending this proven system to Space Marine 3, the studio aims to enhance the game’s technical performance and visual fidelity.
While Focus Entertainment’s financial report characterized Toxic Commando’s performance as somewhat disappointing relative to publisher expectations, Willits’s comments at gamescom suggest the project succeeded in advancing Saber Interactive’s technical capabilities. The reuse of this technology across multiple flagship titles demonstrates how even underperforming commercial projects can yield valuable technical improvements for future releases.
