More than 40% of people cancelling Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions blame rising costs
More than 40% of players cancelling subscriptions to major gaming services cite rising costs as the primary reason, according to new data from market research firm Circana. The trend represents a significant increase from earlier in the year, indicating that subscription price hikes are becoming an increasingly significant factor in player decisions to abandon services.
The survey focused on three major subscription offerings: Xbox Game Pass Essential, PlayStation Plus Essential, and Nintendo Switch Online. Circana’s senior director and video game analyst Mat Piscatella highlighted that cost is becoming a stronger driver of cancellations in the US market, suggesting that price sensitivity among subscribers has intensified throughout 2026.
The finding underscores mounting pressure on gaming platform holders to balance revenue generation through subscription services with player retention. As these services have raised prices in recent years—including tier restructuring and feature changes—subscribers increasingly view cost as an obstacle to continued engagement. The data suggests that players are making deliberate choices to leave these services due to affordability concerns, rather than other factors like content availability or feature sets.
