Diablo 5 Is Coming In 2029, Will Actually Star Diablo
Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, confirming the next mainline entry in the nearly 30-year-old Diablo franchise will release in Spring 2029—six years after Diablo 4’s 2023 launch.
The most significant shift in the series’ story direction is that Diablo 5 will be set entirely in a post-apocalyptic world. Taking place approximately 100 years after the events of Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, the game will see Diablo, the Lord of Terror, return in triumph. Unlike previous installments where players fight to prevent the apocalypse, Sanctuary has already fallen in Diablo 5. The game’s central premise asks: “What must you become when the world has already fallen?”
According to Diablo 4 director Joe Shely, “The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won.” Players will enter a world where Diablo has already conquered Sanctuary, with no towns or safe places to protect them. A brief teaser trailer showcased a grim tone, depicting a horde of angels being slayed by Diablo’s forces.
This marks the first time in the series that Diablo himself will be the central focus and where players navigate a world he has already conquered rather than attempting to stop him. While additional details about classes, gameplay features, and story were promised for the Diablo 5 Forging the Next Era panel held during BlizzCon, specific platform information and an exact release date within Spring 2029 remain unannounced.
