Square Enix scrambles to fix Final Fantasy 14 bug where new beastmaster could crash entire servers

Square Enix released the Beastmaster job class for Final Fantasy 14 on September 8, 2026, but was forced to conduct emergency maintenance the same day to fix a critical server-crashing bug.

The bug occurs under a highly specific set of circumstances: if a player’s character disconnects from the server at the exact moment the Beastmaster’s pet uses a weapon skill that restores the master’s HP, the entire server can crash. While the conditions are narrow, the bug is easily replicated by intentionally disconnecting during that window, making it a significant stability risk.

Unlike typical client-side crashes that only affect individual players, this bug could bring down the entire server, potentially disrupting gameplay for thousands of players. The emergency maintenance was necessary to prevent widespread service disruptions. The incident highlights the challenges of deploying new content in live-service MMORPGs, where edge cases involving multiple game systems and network conditions can have outsized impacts.
