StarCraft Is Officially Back, But It’s Taking A Much Different Form
Blizzard has officially announced a new StarCraft game at BlizzCon 2026, marking the beloved franchise’s return after more than a decade of dormancy. The upcoming title, simply titled StarCraft, is scheduled for release in 2030 and represents a significant departure from the real-time strategy gameplay that defined the series.
Rather than continuing the RTS tradition that made StarCraft a cornerstone of competitive gaming, the new title will be an open-world shooter. VP and GM of StarCraft Dan Hay announced the project, declaring “It’s about damn time” that the franchise returned to its interstellar conflict.
Blizzard revealed a cinematic trailer during the opening ceremony showcasing the game’s tone and setting. The footage depicts Terran Dominion Space Marines undergoing training and preparation for combat, with faction leader Arcturus Mengsk delivering an inspirational speech. The trailer culminates in fierce combat against the Zerg, before cutting to a soldier’s bloodied armor being repaired aboard a Dominion vessel—emphasizing the brutal nature of this sci-fi universe.
This marks the first new StarCraft release since 2017’s StarCraft: Remastered, with the last major expansion to StarCraft II arriving earlier. The genre shift recalls Blizzard’s previous attempt to bring StarCraft into the shooter space through StarCraft: Ghost in 2002, which languished in development hell before cancellation in 2014.
The 2030 release window reflects Blizzard’s historical pattern of announcing major titles years in advance. Development is being led by veteran talent, including leadership from Far Cry. While no gameplay footage has been shown, developers have promised more details will emerge closer to launch.
