Diablo 5 is coming spring 2029, and a Netflix show is in development
Blizzard officially announced Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, with a Spring 2029 release date for the next mainline entry in the action RPG franchise. In a significant departure from series tradition, Diablo 5 is set 100 years after Diablo 4 in a post-apocalyptic Sanctuary where Diablo has already triumphed and heroes have been defeated—a reversal of the typical narrative structure where players prevent catastrophe.
Blizzard revealed three playable classes: the Monk and Demon Hunter returning from Diablo 3, and an entirely new class called the Plague Knight, described as “walking death” capable of spreading disease and pestilence to enhance its power. Multiplayer will be fully supported, allowing players to experience all content solo or cooperatively, though specific mechanics remain unrevealed.
The decision to create a new mainline entry stems from narrative scope considerations. Blizzard determined that the three-game story arc featuring Mephisto and Lilith concluded with Diablo 4, warranting a fresh start centered on Diablo himself. Consequently, Diablo 4 will receive no additional expansions as development resources shift toward the new title.
The project features notable creative talent, with Jennifer Brandes Hepler—former BioWare senior writer known for her work on the Dragon Age series—serving as narrative director. Her involvement underscores Blizzard’s emphasis on narrative depth for the new game.
