Warcraft 3: Reforged adds always-online requirement, removes LAN mode

Warcraft 3: Reforged’s 3.0 patch, released alongside the new Forsaken Kingdom expansion, has introduced controversial changes to the game’s connectivity requirements. The update now mandates an internet connection for all gameplay modes, including single-player experiences. Additionally, local area network (LAN) functionality has been completely removed from the remastered version.

Blizzard has not publicly explained the reasoning behind these connectivity changes in its official patch notes, leaving players to speculate about the company’s motivations. However, Blizzard acknowledges that players who prefer offline or LAN gaming still have access to the legacy Warcraft 3 client included with any Warcraft 3: Reforged purchase. The company has provided a support page with instructions for installing this older version.

The decision represents another contentious moment for a title that has struggled with player sentiment since its initial launch. Warcraft 3: Reforged was already an embattled release, and removing core features like offline single-player and LAN support adds to existing player frustrations. The change forces players choosing the modern version to remain connected to the internet at all times, even for solo gameplay, a requirement that may exclude players with unstable connections or those in regions with limited internet infrastructure.
