World of Warcraft Forever hype dampened by $30 elves: New Skyborne race locked behind expansion-tier purchase

Blizzard’s announcement of World of Warcraft: Forever at BlizzCon 2026 has generated controversy over monetization practices. WoW Forever represents the company’s take on the long-requested “Classic+” concept, targeting players who prefer the original game’s social-first experience before modern features like automated matchmaking fragmented the community.

While most of the new game is included with a standard WoW subscription, Blizzard is selling the new Skyborne Elf race and its starter zone as part of a $30 “Skyborne Hero Pack.” The package also includes a mount, cosmetics, housing decorations, and early name reservation access. This pricing structure has drawn criticism from players, with some characterizing it as “elfflation” given that the race is the primary new content available at launch.

The controversy has two dimensions: the steep price point for a single playable race, and growing frustration among the community with Blizzard’s repeated focus on elf races. When questioned about the latter concern, Blizzard defended the choice by noting that elves consistently rank among players’ most popular options. However, critics argue the company is leveraging this popularity to justify monetization of core gameplay content that would traditionally be included in an expansion purchase.
