Bungie is overhauling Marathon from its original extraction shooter vision
Bungie is significantly overhauling its extraction shooter Marathon, moving away from its original vision with the introduction of a permanent PvE mode. The new mode, called Symbiosis, will arrive as part of a major update on December 8, delayed from the originally scheduled September 22 release. The studio has positioned Symbiosis as “the first major step” in Marathon’s next chapter, reflecting the game’s evolving direction beyond its initial extraction-based gameplay.
Along with the new permanent PvE experience, Bungie is abandoning its established seasonal release cadence to provide the team with greater flexibility in development, testing, and feature refinement. The decision to overhaul Marathon’s direction and restructure its update schedule comes amid ongoing changes and pressure on the studio. Previously, Bungie had tested a casual PvP-lite mode in June as players continued to explore different gameplay experiences. The company’s shift toward PvE content and away from strict seasonal schedules suggests a strategic pivot in response to player feedback and internal development considerations.
