Everything we’ve gleaned about Diablo 5 since its BlizzCon 2026 reveal - a game that appears to be much more than Diablo 4.5

Blizzard announced Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, revealing a significantly darker and more ambitious take on the long-running action RPG franchise than previously expected. Rather than an expansion to Diablo 4, the new title represents a full sequel scheduled for spring 2029 release.

The game is set approximately a century after the events of Diablo 4, in a version of Sanctuary that has fully succumbed to evil. Unlike previous Diablo entries where players worked to save the world from demonic corruption, Diablo 5 begins after the Lord of Terror has already conquered Sanctuary. Human strongholds have been destroyed, survivors are scattered across the land, and the setting is described as post-apocalyptic and bleak.

Despite this grim premise, Blizzard emphasizes that hope still exists within the world, providing players with motivation to continue fighting even in a seemingly lost cause. The developers justified the new game status rather than an expansion by citing scope too grand to fit within Diablo 4’s framework.

Regarding gameplay, Blizzard confirmed that set items are returning to the franchise. Set items were absent from Diablo 4 at launch but were later introduced through the Talisman system. The development team is working to avoid the issues that set items created in previous games while maintaining the satisfying loot-grinding experience the franchise is known for. Blizzard also indicated the game will include diverse elements to appeal to different playstyles.
