Admitting the OGL fiasco was a ‘rug pull’, D&D head says ‘bluntly, we’re recovering from a lot of missteps—very loud, very public missteps’

Dungeons & Dragons and parent company Wizards of the Coast faced a significant public relations crisis stemming from a 2023 leak of a revised Open Game License (OGL). The proposed changes represented a dramatic shift in how the company would manage third-party content, granting WotC broad authority to revoke licenses and control creator output—a move widely criticized as a “rug pull.”

The backlash forced an immediate and dramatic reversal of the policy. However, the incident marked the beginning of a much longer recovery period for the franchise’s reputation and standing within its creator community. Dan Ayoub, who assumed leadership as head of the D&D franchise at Wizards of the Coast in late 2025, has publicly acknowledged the severity of the damage caused by what he terms “very loud, very public missteps.”

In candid remarks, Ayoub admitted that the company is “recovering from a lot of missteps” and stated plainly that restoring community trust will require sustained effort extending well beyond a single year. His acknowledgment represents the company’s formal recognition of the OGL controversy as a strategic failure that deeply harmed relations with the independent creator community and broader D&D ecosystem.
