Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Doesn’t Have Waypoints Because the Devs Want Players to ‘Figure Things Out’ for Themselves
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons intentionally excludes waypoints and traditional quest markers to foster genuine exploration and discovery, according to developer Invoke Studios. The open-world single-player action-adventure removes conventional hand-holding mechanics that typically guide players directly through story objectives, instead requiring players to navigate through environmental clues, NPC dialogue, and independent problem-solving.
The game features a compass displayed at the top of the screen, though players can disable it entirely if desired, creating a more challenging and immersive navigational experience. This design philosophy prioritizes player agency and engagement with the game world over accessibility-focused convenience.
Dominic Guay, General Manager at Invoke Studios, explained the rationale at gamescom 2026, emphasizing the importance of allowing players to discover solutions and objectives organically. The approach represents a deliberate departure from contemporary game design conventions that prioritize streamlined guidance systems, instead betting on player satisfaction derived from independent exploration, environmental storytelling, and autonomous problem-solving. This philosophy encourages players to feel genuine accomplishment when successfully navigating objectives without explicit direction.
