Windows 11 update breaks copy and paste in Microsoft Excel
Microsoft’s Windows 11 is experiencing a new critical bug that breaks copy and paste functionality in Microsoft Excel across versions 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. The paste operation fails silently, leaving users unable to move content to their intended destinations while the source remains selected, with no error notification to alert them to the failure.
The issue emerges during a particularly challenging period for Microsoft, following recent bugs affecting Hyper-V Linux folder shares, Remote Desktop, and USB audio in Windows 11. While those problems were addressed through an out-of-band update, the Excel paste bug currently remains unfixed.
The silent nature of the failure represents a significant usability concern for Excel users, potentially causing data integrity issues and workflow disruptions. Without error feedback, users may be unaware that their paste operations have failed, assuming content has been successfully transferred when it hasn’t.
The bug raises questions about Windows 11’s testing procedures and update stability, particularly given the frequency of recent issues affecting core OS functionality and widely-used applications.
