The Witcher 3 ‘is not untouchable,’ story director says of changes in the upcoming remaster: ‘I still find some places that I think maybe nowadays, I would do it differently’

CD Projekt Red is releasing a remaster of The Witcher 3 as a free update on September 29, 2026, with the goal of making the acclaimed 2015 RPG feel like a modern game. Rather than cosmetic changes, the studio is implementing more substantial modifications than the previous next-generation console update, which was primarily driven by new hardware capabilities.

Story director Marcin Blacha stated that The Witcher 3 is “not untouchable,” indicating the team would redesign certain elements differently if approaching them today. This willingness to reimagine core aspects of the game reflects CD Projekt’s commitment to modernizing the experience in line with contemporary design standards.

The remaster prioritizes different goals compared to past updates. Executive producer Jakub Kutrzuba explained that while the last major update focused on new console generation features, this remaster aims for broader modernization. Blacha also discussed the studio’s quest design philosophy, emphasizing that meaningful choices should provoke genuine player reflection rather than obvious decisions. He described an ideal quest as one that compels players to pause, step away from the controller, and contemplate their options before returning to make their choice.

The remaster represents CD Projekt’s effort to maintain The Witcher 3’s relevance and cultural impact nearly a decade after its original release.
