Legendary RPG Officially Coming to Steam 37 Years After Release
Wizardry, the pioneering first-person RPG series that debuted in 1981, is finally making its way to Steam with a 2027 release of Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge. The port, developed by D4Enterprise and published by Drecom, marks a significant milestone—bringing the Super Famicom classic to modern PC platforms nearly four decades after its original release.
Originally created by North American studio Sir-Tech, Wizardry has profoundly influenced gaming history, serving as a foundational inspiration for iconic franchises including Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, and Fire Emblem. While the series has largely faded from Western visibility, Japan has sustained it through more than 40 localized and Japan-exclusive spin-offs across the decades.
Wizardry 6 holds particular significance as the first entry in the franchise to feature full-color graphics, representing a major technical evolution for the series. This Steam release represents an important act of game preservation, returning a historically significant title to modern players and introducing a foundational RPG experience to new audiences unfamiliar with the series’ formative influence on contemporary gaming.
