‘Coraline’ Studio’s New Film Is Already the Fantasy Movie Event of 2026
Laika Studios, the acclaimed stop-motion animation studio behind Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, is preparing to release Wildwood, an adaptation of Colin Meloy’s bestselling children’s fantasy novel. The film, scheduled for theatrical release on October 23, 2026, marks the studio’s most ambitious project to date.
The story follows Prue, a young girl who leaves her home in Portland and ventures into a fantasy world to rescue her baby brother. Laika is pushing the technical and artistic boundaries of stop-motion animation to bring the high-fantasy narrative to life, advancing the art form in unprecedented ways to realize the story’s magical elements and adventurous scope.
Polygon received an early press preview at Laika’s Portland, Oregon headquarters, noting that the studio is utilizing every advancement available to them to deliver what is being positioned as a major fantasy entertainment event of 2026.
