Full body tracking could come to Steam Frame courtesy of this supercharged Base Station-like device that doesn’t require headset support

Soulart is developing a standalone motion tracker to enable full body tracking support for Steam Frame, Valve’s recently announced inside-out tracked VR headset. Steam Frame represents a shift in Valve’s approach to VR hardware, utilizing inside-out tracking technology that eliminates the need for external setup infrastructure. This advancement allows users to enter VR experiences without additional hardware configuration. However, for users seeking full body motion capture—tracking arms, legs, and torso in addition to the headset and controllers—additional hardware solutions have been necessary. Historically, Valve relied on Base Stations, external infrared tracking devices, for precise full body tracking with the Valve Index. These Base Stations, which use infrared technology, continue to be used by other VR headsets including Bigscreen Beyond and Pimax systems. Soulart’s new standalone motion tracker represents an alternative approach, offering enhanced tracking capabilities that work independently of headset support requirements. This device could potentially provide full body tracking without the complexity and infrastructure demands of traditional Base Station setups. If successfully implemented, Soulart’s solution could make full body VR motion capture more accessible to Steam Frame users, expanding the platform’s capabilities for immersive gaming and social experiences while reducing hardware complexity.
