Call Of Duty: Black Ops Dev Teases “Something That Nobody’s Ever Experienced Before”
Treyarch, the longtime developer of Call of Duty’s Black Ops franchise, is moving on to its next project after completing two consecutive Black Ops titles. The studio finished development on Black Ops 6 (2024) and Black Ops 7 (2025), marking the conclusion of a two-year cycle focused on the iconic series.
With Season 6 launching on September 17, 2025, Treyarch is officially closing the book on its current Black Ops era. In a new developer video, design director Kevin Drew expressed that the team has “learned a lot” and “tried a lot of things” during the back-to-back development cycle. However, he signaled the studio’s readiness to pursue a fresh direction.
“We’re ready to make something new and something that nobody’s ever experienced before,” Drew stated, though he offered no specifics about what the next Call of Duty project will entail. The vague promise of innovation aligns with Call of Duty’s tendency toward ambitious messaging, though exactly what form the next installment will take remains unknown.
The transition marks an unusual move for the franchise, as back-to-back Black Ops releases are uncommon. Treyarch’s departure from the series—at least temporarily—opens questions about which studio will helm the next mainline Call of Duty title. The Black Ops brand has remained one of the franchise’s most popular entries since its 2010 debut.
