The Witcher 3 producer says it’s scary to work with another studio on the game’s expansion: ‘I also think twice about leaving my baby with someone’
CD Projekt Red is reviving The Witcher 3 with a substantial expansion titled Songs of the Past and a comprehensive remaster, released over a decade after the original game. The studio is simultaneously developing The Witcher 4, requiring an unconventional approach: partnering with Fool’s Theory, a studio founded by former CD Projekt Red employees, to lead the expansion’s development.
Executive producer Jakub Kutrzuba discussed the collaboration with PC Gamer, candidly acknowledging the emotional complexity of entrusting external developers with a flagship franchise. Using the metaphor of leaving a child in someone else’s care, he described it as “scary” and intimidating, admitting to hesitation about the arrangement. However, Kutrzuba expressed confidence in the partnership, noting that despite personal concerns, “there are people over there who are not me who take the best care ever of them.”
The collaboration demonstrates how modern game studios manage competing development priorities through strategic partnerships, particularly when leveraging teams with institutional knowledge of the original studio’s vision and technical standards. By having former CDPR members lead the expansion at Fool’s Theory, CD Projekt Red aims to maintain quality and consistency while advancing multiple projects simultaneously.
