Denuvo, the major digital rights management (DRM) company, is pursuing legal action against a prolific DRM cracker known online as “voices38.” The lawsuit marks an unusual move, as it comes directly from Denuvo rather than from individual game publishers or copyright holders whose games have been targeted.
The cracker “voices38” has built a prominent reputation for releasing circumvention patches or “cracks” that bypass Denuvo’s copy protection systems on popular titles, including Hogwarts Legacy and Black Myth: Wukong. These cracks allow users to play games without the DRM protections in place, effectively removing the security measures that publishers have implemented.
Denuvo is pursuing the case under the anti-circumvention provisions of intellectual property law. This legal approach represents an escalation in the ongoing battle between DRM providers and the cracking community, with Denuvo taking direct action rather than relying on individual game publishers to pursue separate infringement claims against the cracker.
