Hyper Light Drifter developer Heart Machine has laid off the majority of staff

Indie developer Heart Machine, known for creating Hyper Light Drifter, has laid off nearly its entire staff after a major publisher abruptly cancelled funding for an unannounced game the studio was developing. Studio founder Alx Preston announced the cuts on LinkedIn, describing the situation as “devastating” and expressing uncertainty about the studio’s survival. Preston stated that without the publisher’s income and lacking immediate alternative prospects or funds, the layoffs became necessary. The studio is providing support to affected employees, including assistance with job placement. Heart Machine has previously released Hyper Light Drifter, its multiplayer spinoff Hyper Light Breaker, and last year’s Possessor(s). Preston emphasized that while Heart Machine technically continues to exist as an entity, its future remains precarious. This layoff adds to a broader pattern of industry challenges, as Preston noted that navigating an “increasingly challenging industry has been extremely difficult.” The studio’s situation highlights the risks independent developers face when reliant on publisher funding for survival.
